This explains why <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">people engage so quickly<\/span> with campaigns having the potential to produce effects, any effects, on their kids\u2019 well being. Let\u2019s call it a guarding instinct.<\/p>\n<p>Professionals handle child-related messages carefully. What happens if they don\u2019t? A mess. I chose a campaign kicked off by a well-known NGO in the fall of 2017 to illustrate this.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>EARLY FACTS:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hardly had Salva\u021bi Copiii (Save the Children Romania) started a campaign bearing the slogan <strong>\u201c<\/strong><b>Abolish break time!\u201d<\/b>, than a negative buzz quickly erupted on social media:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0&#8211; The first 21 out of 27 reviews on the campaign\u2019s Facebook page received the lowest grade. One star.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0&#8211; Bad feedback followed: <em>\u201cCommunism died about 28 years ago. Stop promoting such bullshit\u201d; \u201cYou must be out of your minds\u201d.<\/em> \u00a0Hate speech soon flooded their page (which bears the name of the slogan: \u201cAbolish break time!\u201d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0&#8211; Let\u2019s move to influencers\/endorsers* now. Journalist Dinu Boboc was excluded from an endorser\u2019s list after expressing an opinion on the latter\u2019s Facebook wall. A female commentator joined the conversation and confessed that she had turned down the invitation to support the campaign because it urged to abolish breaks. Both persons\u2019 comments were deleted the following day. Why?<\/p>\n<p>The endorser, Adriana Moscu, coordinator editor at Marie Claire magazine, declined to comment for this article. But reflect a little bit: one journalist behaves against another journalist to defend a PR message. How does this sound?[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243;][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][image_with_animation image_url=&#8221;7649&#8243; alignment=&#8221;&#8221; animation=&#8221;None&#8221; img_link_large=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]Despite a large amount of positive content generated by endorsers and the media, <strong>a smokescreen was thrown over the issue<\/strong> but the core question remained unanswered. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bad reviews, negative feedback, a slogan promoting a violation of the law and the silencing of journalists are early signs that something went wrong.<b> <\/b><\/span>What could that be?<\/p>\n<p><i>[*influencers \/ endorsers = people who promote a cause or a brand (bloggers, journalists, celebrities, starlets, PR people). Usually, they get money, benefits or influence in exchange.]<\/i>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243;][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h3><strong>#1 THE MESSAGE STRATEGY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I asked my class at the faculty what they think about this campaign soon after it was launched. They all loudly denounced the message strategy. It\u2019s basic communication science. They are taught in school that\u00a0<i>\u201cthe medium is the message\u201d <\/i>(Marshall McLuhan, one of the most original thinkers of our time).<i>\u00a0<\/i>It means that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your Facebook page and your campaign\u2019s website are named after your slogan;<\/li>\n<li>If you kick off your campaign using hashtags that urge the abolishment of school break time;<\/li>\n<li>If your videos and Key-Visuals are built around the same urge,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Then your key message is to abolish break time,<\/span> not to repress violence in schools.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proiectulmerito.ro\/dorin-fiscutean-profesor-colegiu-national-iasi\/\">Dorin Fiscutean<\/a>, a teacher of Geography in Iasi, put it: <i>\u201cWe don\u2019t understand your message. Do you want to take children\u2019s happiness away \u2026 or what?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Fiscutean, who has many years of experience in dealing with children, says that violence may occur at the school\u2019s entrance. Or in the digital environment. Or elsewhere. <i>\u201cThere are other ways to combat aggression between children, but the idea of abolishing break time is completely wrong\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><strong>\u201cThe idea of abolishing break time is completely wrong<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; Dorin Fiscutean, a teacher in Iasi city<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Carmen Musat, a psychologist and psychotherapist in Paris says that bullying is common in France, too. But she has not heard about abolishing break time as a solution to this problem. <i>\u201cBreaks are extremely important. Children reach burnout too, so break time is a must.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><strong>\u201cChildren reach burnout<\/strong>, so break time is a must\u201d &#8211; Carmen Musat, a psychologist and psychotherapist in Paris<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cThe message is pointless. Many of the aggressions take place during classes, in front of teachers or against teachers<\/em><i>\u201d,<\/i> says an experienced teacher from Br\u0103ila who required not to disclose her identity. Her daughter used to be a target of bullies <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">during<\/span> classes.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo urging to abolish recess doesn&#8217;t help at all. On the contrary, I find it <strong>rather harmful<\/strong> since it puts pressure on young children and teenagers<i>\u201d,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>But what Dorin Fiscutean, the teacher, Carmen Musat, the psychologist, and the teacher in Br\u0103ila say are not just opinions from the field. <a href=\"http:\/\/cnaob.org\/docs\/legislatie\/rofuip_2016.pdf\"><b>It\u2019s what the law<\/b><\/a> declares:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIn the primary school, a class is 45 minutes long, followed by a 15-minute recess. The second class is followed by a 20-minute break. In the first two grades (i.e. preparatory class and the first grade), activities (teaching-learning-evaluation) must last for no longer than 30\u201435 minutes\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Children in the gymnasium, high-school, and vocational schools attend 50-minute classes; the recess is 10 min. \u201cA 15-20 minute break may follow after the third class.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Ministry Order &#8211; MENCS no. 5079\/2016)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243;][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][image_with_animation image_url=&#8221;7681&#8243; alignment=&#8221;&#8221; animation=&#8221;Fade In&#8221; img_link_large=&#8221;yes&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243;][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h3><strong>#2 MISMANAGEMENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><i>\u201cYou misunderstood\u201d; \u201cOur target is not to abolish break time, but bullying\u201d; \u201cWhy don\u2019t you have patience?\u201d <\/i>These were some of the defensive reactions the NGO employed through various channels.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Salva\u021bi Copiii repeatedly rejected any wrongdoing<\/span> on their side and implied that if there was a communications error, then that was on the receptor\u2019s side (the public). So the way they managed communication (in this campaign) was their decision\u201d<\/i>, explains Diana Stanculeanu, who coordinates this program.<\/p>\n<p><b>Would you leave your reputation in the hands of an inexperienced outsider<\/b>? Specialists would recommend you not to.<\/p>\n<p>Last, but not least: a PR person from Ranevents, the agency handling this campaign, said in a phone conversation that EU money is involved in the campaign, but some days later she denied to have provided that information. Stanculeanu clarified the issue later: \u201cno EU financing\u201d. The NGO generated revenues of EUR 4.4 million in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><b>What was the reason to release information without properly researching it?<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><strong>#3 POTENTIALLY HARMFUL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In August 2017 the Government, through the arm of the Ministry of Education, joined the project run by Salva\u021bi Copiii.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s now give a quick look at the recent history: the Ministry launched in the same period (summer of 2017) a Sports book for pupils to study at school. People reacted swiftly and the critics pounced: sports is something children should be encouraged to practice, not memorize from a book; why does the Government stimulate a sedentary, i.e. unhealthy lifestyle?<\/p>\n<p>Technically,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> the event was still fresh in Romanians\u2019 minds when the message against school break time flooded the media<\/span>. To think it is cool to endorse a ban on break time, when children build relationships, play, eat or simply rest, is not a lighthearted matter. Among the influencers who embraced the idea that break time should be abolished were journalists, bloggers, entrepreneurs, starlets and even an owner of a media outlet for children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Is bullying a strong enough excuse to embrace such a potentially harmful call-to-action supported by the Government? <\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>WHY POTENTIALLY HARMFUL?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The answer comes to light through research.<\/p>\n<p>Romania is not the first, nor the last country on Earth to face violence among children at school.<\/p>\n[Salva\u021bi Copiii admits they have been running programs against violence since 1997. Did this two-decade-long project produce results? Apparently not, since the NGO keeps pouring in money \u201cto raise awareness\u201d and \u201ceducate\u201d.]\n<p>The relationship between break time and violence has been talked about and researched for a long time. In 2002, The Psychologist, which is the official monthly publication of The British Psychological Society, wrote about the developmental and educational significance of break time in school:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Children\u2019s break time in Britain and the USA has been relegated by current educational policy to a place of unimportance in the school curriculum. Educators think that break time (\u2026) provides opportunities for children to exhibit antisocial behavior. (\u2026) Allotting less time for break, or even eliminating it completely, is common practice. <\/i><b><i>The popular press in both the UK and the US have highlighted the problem<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepsychologist.bps.org.uk\/volume-15\/edition-2\/time-break\">Research<\/a><\/span> in the field conducted by Professors Anthony D. Pellegrini and Peter Blatchford leads to this conclusion: <i>\u201c<\/i><b><i>Break time is <\/i><\/b><strong><i>crucial<\/i><\/strong><i> for academic achievement, peer relations, and more general school adjustment. <\/i><b><i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The importance<\/span> of this conclusion <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">should not be underestimated<\/span>.<\/i><\/b><i>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Abolishing opportunities for relatively free contact is unlikely in the end to abolish the causes of aggression<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201d<\/span> &#8211; Professor Peter Blatchford, University College London<\/strong><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>\u201cMISGUIDED\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The co-author of this research, Prof. Peter Blatchford, is a Professor of Psychology and Education at the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL), one of the world&#8217;s leading universities. Prof. Blatchford answered the following question for this article:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>A campaign launched in Romania under the core message \u201cAbolish break time!\u201d claimed that would be a solution to violence in schools. What is your opinion about the message?<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prof. Blatchford**, who earned an international reputation for <a href=\"https:\/\/thepsychologist.bps.org.uk\/volume-15\/edition-2\/time-break\">work on school break times<\/a>\/recess:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>&#8211; I don\u2019t know the school system in Romania, but one hears these kinds of comments in the UK and especially the USA. It is in my view <b>misguided <\/b>because it fails to recognize the social function of free time in schools and the opportunities for schools to work on acceptable social and moral perspectives.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u00a0&#8211; If there is a problem with violence in schools then it suggests schools need to do more to develop constructive behavior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u00a0&#8211; Kids learn from interaction with each other.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><b>\u00a0&#8211; Abolishing opportunities for relatively free contact is unlikely in the end to abolish the causes of aggression.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><i>[** Prof. Peter Blatchford<\/i><i>\u00a0has written many books and papers. People reacted swiftly and the critics pounced: sports is something children should be encouraged to practice, not memorize from a book; why does the Government stimulate a sedentary, i.e. unhealthy lifestyle?<\/p>\n<p>Technically,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> the event was still fresh in Romanians\u2019 minds when the message against school break time flooded the media<\/span>. To think it is cool to endorse a ban on break time, when children build relationships, play, eat or simply rest, is not a lighthearted matter. Among the influencers who embraced the idea that break time should be abolished were journalists, bloggers, entrepreneurs, starlets and even an owner of a media outlet for children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Is bullying a strong enough excuse to embrace such a potentially harmful call-to-action supported by the Government? <\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>WHY POTENTIALLY HARMFUL?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The answer comes to light through research.<\/p>\n<p>Romania is not the first, nor the last country on Earth to face violence among children at school.<\/p>\n[Salva\u021bi Copiii admits they have been running programs against violence since 1997. Did this two-decade-long project produce results? Apparently not, since the NGO keeps pouring in money \u201cto raise awareness\u201d and \u201ceducate\u201d.]\n<p>The relationship between break time and violence has been talked about and researched for a long time. In 2002, The Psychologist, which is the official monthly publication of The British Psychological Society, wrote about the developmental and educational significance of break time in school:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Children\u2019s break time in Britain and the USA has been relegated by current educational policy to a place of unimportance in the school curriculum. Educators think that break time (\u2026) provides opportunities for children to exhibit antisocial behavior. (\u2026) Allotting less time for break, or even eliminating it completely, is common practice. <\/i><b><i>The popular press in both the UK and the US have highlighted the problem<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepsychologist.bps.org.uk\/volume-15\/edition-2\/time-break\">Research<\/a><\/span> in the field conducted by Professors Anthony D. Pellegrini and Peter Blatchford leads to this conclusion: <i>\u201c<\/i><b><i>Break time is <\/i><\/b><strong><i>crucial<\/i><\/strong><i> for academic achievement, peer relations, and more general school adjustment. <\/i><b><i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The importance<\/span> of this conclusion <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">should not be underestimated<\/span>.<\/i><\/b><i>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Abolishing opportunities for relatively free contact is unlikely in the end to abolish the causes of aggression<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201d<\/span> &#8211; Professor Peter Blatchford, University College London<\/strong><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>\u201cMISGUIDED\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The co-author of this research, Prof. Peter Blatchford, is a Professor in Psychology and Education at the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL), one of the world&#8217;s leading universities. Prof. Blatchford answered the following question for this article:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>A campaign launched in Romania under the core message \u201cAbolish break time!\u201d claimed that would be a solution to violence in schools. What is your opinion about the message?<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prof. Blatchford**, who earned international reputation for <a href=\"https:\/\/thepsychologist.bps.org.uk\/volume-15\/edition-2\/time-break\">work on school break times<\/a>\/recess:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>&#8211; I don\u2019t know the school system in Romania, but one hears these kinds of comments in the UK and especially the USA. It is in my view <b>misguided <\/b>because it fails to recognize the social function of free time in schools and the opportunities for schools to work on acceptable social and moral perspectives.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u00a0&#8211; If there is a problem with violence in schools then it suggests schools need to do more to develop constructive behavior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u00a0&#8211; Kids learn from interaction with each other.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><b>\u00a0&#8211; Abolishing opportunities for relatively free contact is unlikely in the end to abolish the causes of aggression.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><i>[** Prof. Peter Blatchford<\/i><i>\u00a0has written many books and papers. He conducted the first national survey of break times in England and (with Professor Tony Pellegrini) a project on the significance of playground games in peer relations and friendships in the UK and USA.]<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>THE OUTCOME? ON PAPER. EFFECTS? UNKNOWN.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The collaboration between Salva\u021bi Copiii and the Ministry of Education in this campaign will result in \u201ca document for public policy\u201d. Neither of them offered details about its content.<\/p>\n<p>CAMPAIGN: \u201cStop bullying or abolish break time!\u201d It kicked off carrying this key message: \u201cAbolish break time!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CLIENT: Salva\u021bi Copiii (Save the Children); revenues of EUR 4.4 million in 2016<\/p>\n<p>FIELD: NGOs<\/p>\n<p>PERIOD. BUDGET: It will run for 36 months, with a budget of EUR 30,000 per year<\/p>\n<p>OBJECTIVES: Awareness, quality education and advocacy<\/p>\n<p>AGENCIES: Creative Laboratories, Ranevents (PR)<\/p>\n<p>COMMUNICATION TARGETS: Facebook Page \u2013 500 likes \/ month; 3% engagement rate; YouTube Videos \u2013 5,000 views \/ video; \u2028Influencers: about 40 posts in social media; Media: 25 items (print, online, TV, radio)<\/p>\n<p>PARTNERSHIP: The Ministry of Education partnered with Salva\u021bi Copiii in August 2017.
